Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times and may only visit during approved hours. Children are restricted from visiting all intensive care units, patients on isolation, and patients on Protective Precautions unless they have a physician's order. Before visiting, children must be screened for contagious illness by the staff on the patient care unit.
UNC Health Care will not deny, limit, or restrict visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, culture, language, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, size, or disability, and will respect the wishes of the patient in allowing visitors of their choosing, subject to the policy outlined below.
UNC Health Care shall treat all individuals seeking to visit patients equally, consistent with the preferences of the patient or the patient’s support person. A patient has the right to designate visitors who shall receive the same visitation privileges as the patient's immediate family members, regardless of whether the visitors are legally related to the patient, and visitors may include spouses, domestic partners, different-sex and same-sex significant others, different-sex and same-sex parents, other family members, friends, and persons from a patient’s community. Same-sex parents may visit and care for their minor children who are hospitalized with all the rights and responsibilities as different-sex parents.
