Child Maltreatment Program

The UNC Child Maltreatment Section includes clinical activities with UNC Children’s Hospital (Beacon Child and Family Program) as well as advocacy efforts with the NC Division of Social Services, Child Welfare Services.
The UNC Beacon Child and Family Program Children’s Services includes both inpatient and outpatient consultation by child maltreatment experts. Inpatient consultation is requested by the attending physician for patients with concerns for abuse or neglect. Outpatient consultation are made by child welfare and/or law enforcement.

The Child Maltreatment Section also provides the administration of the NC Child Medical Evaluation Program (CMEP), a state-wide network of medical and mental health clinicians who evaluate child maltreatment. NC CMEP operates as a cooperative effort of the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and NC Division of Social Services to provide assessments of children’s well-being needs during an active child welfare assessment.
