Referrals for Kidney Care
We welcome referrals from physicians and physician inquiries about all aspects of renal disease. To speak with a physician, consult about a patient, or refer a patient, call the Carolina Consultation Center at (800) 862-6264. For emergent same-day consults, physicians should call (919) 966-4131 and have the Consult Attending paged.
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology provides diagnosis and management of congenital anomalies and acquired disorders of the kidneys and genitourinary tract, as well as treatment of end-stage renal disease. The division offers consultation for problems including hematuria (blood in the urine), proteinuria (protein in the urine), nephrotic syndrome, hypertension (high blood pressure), acid-base and salt-water disturbances, tubulointerstitial nephropathy, and acute and chronic renal failure. The division performs the following procedures: percutaneous renal biopsy, peritoneal dialysis, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis, acute and chronic hemodialysis, and continuous arteriovenous hemofiltration.
Special Services
The division treats end-stage renal disease and performs peritoneal and hemodialysis and hemofiltration in infants, children, and adolescents. A team composed of nephrologists, dialysis and transplant nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, play therapists, dietitians and hospital-based school teachers provides comprehensive support to maintain age-appropriate school performance and to insure optimal rehabilitation during dialysis and following transplantation.
Concurrent clinics with the rheumatology division provide a comprehensive approach to patients with systemic disease complicated by nephritis. Combined clinics with the pediatric urology division provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of infants with congenital obstructive uropathy and children with hematuria, urolithiasis and urinary tract infection complicated by ureterovesical reflux.
